Church Of San Francesco

Bassano del grappa

The church, with a dedication to the Virgin Mary, was built between 1158 and 1183 by the Ezzelini family. Expressly wanted by Ezzelino II the Balbo, returning from the Holy Land, to the satisfaction of one vote. Sold to the Friars Minor Conventual between 1287 and 1292, it was dedicated to San Francesco. In Romanesque-Gothic Latin cross style, the façade has a gabled structure with an agile porch with rounded arches dating back to 1306. Delicate fresco of the Madonna, Child, Sant'Antonio and San Francesco, by Luca Martinelli del 1613 can be seen in the bezel. To the right of the porch is a singular representation of the Annunciation depicted according to the Valentinian heresy with the already formed Child flying from the Holy Spirit towards the womb of Mary, a work by Battista da Vicenza in the early decades of the 1400s. The interior, a single nave intersected by a transept, is covered with trusses and the walls still bear vague traces of fifteenth-century frescoes. On the main altar there is a copy of the wooden Crucifix by Guariento, the original of which can be admired in the adjacent Civic Museum.
