Civic Tower

Bassano del grappa

In Piazza Garibaldi, the Civic Tower, also known as the Great Tower of the Hours and the Tower Clock, rises from its imposing size. Probably built in 1312 by the Da Romano family, on the occasion of the extension of the walls of the second enclosure, in defense and protection for the new village grown outside the walls. In 1349 a bell weighing 500 kilograms was placed. Since then it has been registered in the name of the Municipality. Lookout tower from above had the task of announcing riots, calamities or threats of assault. The name "civic tower" was attributed in 1494 when a stone door was opened at the base with the coat of arms of the city painted on it. During the eighteenth century it was equipped with a clock and in the nineteenth century with the apical rise on the top. It stands out from all other historic city buildings for its central position in the urban layout and for its height (43 meters). Recently restored it has been reopened to the public.
